₹303 Crore Property Tax Arrears Haunt Nagpur Civic Body

₹303 crore property tax dues pending on 474 properties in Nagpur

Nagpur:
Despite deploying all possible measures to recover property tax arrears, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) continues to struggle with mounting dues. Official data shows that ₹303.25 crore in property tax remains unpaid by 474 property owners in the city, prompting the civic body to intensify coercive recovery actions.

In the first phase of enforcement, the NMC has issued final attachment notices to 178 defaulters for recovery of nearly ₹60 crore. For the remaining 282 property owners, who collectively owe ₹251.99 crore, the process of issuing notices has already begun, officials said.

A breakup of the arrears reveals that the principal property tax amount pending from the 474 properties stands at ₹137.42 crore, while the current financial year’s tax dues total ₹149.45 crore. Additionally, penalties and interest on delayed payments have pushed the liability further, with punitive charges alone amounting to ₹151.31 crore.

The civic administration has decided to take stringent action against property owners with outstanding dues exceeding ₹5 lakh. As part of the recovery drive, such properties will be sealed, followed by attachment proceedings. The NMC is also preparing to auction attached properties after valuation.

In cases where auction attempts fail to attract bidders, the municipal corporation’s name will be recorded in the 7/12 land records of the defaulting properties, effectively transferring control to the civic body. Officials noted that commercial properties account for the majority of high-value tax arrears, significantly contributing to the mounting backlog.

The NMC has indicated that the recovery drive will continue in phases, with stricter action planned to ensure substantial realisation of long-pending property tax dues.
