Mohali: The Mohali district police have initiated a major clearance drive involving 498 seized vehicles lying at various police stations across the district. Vehicle owners have been given a final 15-day opportunity to reclaim their vehicles before they are put up for public auction under government rules.
The move comes as police stations continue to face severe space shortages due to the accumulation of unclaimed vehicles involved in accident cases, traffic violations, and other legal matters over the years.
According to an official notice issued by Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Navneet Singh Mahal, vehicle owners must complete the required legal formalities and obtain release orders within the stipulated 15-day period.
Police officials stated that once the deadline expires, the district administration will proceed with the auction process after completing all legal requirements. Necessary court permissions have already been secured for the disposal of the vehicles.
Officials described the announcement as the last opportunity for owners to recover their vehicles before auction proceedings begin.
The large number of vehicles parked in police station premises has created operational challenges for law enforcement agencies. Apart from occupying valuable space, the vehicles require regular maintenance and monitoring, adding to administrative burdens.
Police authorities believe that auctioning long-pending and unclaimed vehicles will help improve infrastructure management while freeing up space at police stations for day-to-day operations.
District police records show that a total of 498 vehicles are currently seized and awaiting disposal across 15 police stations in Mohali district.
