Vasai Virar Traffic Police to Auction 930 Abandoned Vehicles Online; Process Begins

Vasai: In a major step to tackle traffic congestion and roadside clutter, the Vasai Virar Traffic Police have initiated the process to auction around 930 abandoned vehicles through an online platform.

These vehicles, which had been lying unattended across various parts of the city, were earlier seized by traffic authorities for obstructing roads and creating safety hazards. Despite issuing multiple notices to vehicle owners, no one came forward to claim them, prompting officials to move ahead with the auction plan.

Why the Action Was Taken

For the past few years, the issue of abandoned vehicles in Vasai Virar has worsened significantly. These vehicles not only contributed to traffic jams but also posed risks such as:

• Illegal usage of unclaimed vehicles
• Public safety concerns, especially for children playing nearby
• Encroachment of valuable road space

Citizens had repeatedly demanded action to remove such vehicles from public areas.

Challenges Faced by Authorities

Initially, the traffic police struggled due to a lack of storage space for seized vehicles. However, after securing land in the Achole area, authorities began actively removing abandoned vehicles from roads.

In addition to abandoned vehicles, cars and two-wheelers seized during various enforcement drives and criminal cases were also collected and stored.

Auction Process Details

• A total of 930 vehicles have been identified for auction
• On March 8, 2026, a request was sent to the transport department for valuation
• Once valuation is completed, the online auction process will begin

Officials confirmed that 10–15 vehicles were found to be stolen, and necessary legal procedures are being followed in those cases.

Space Crunch Still a Concern

Even as the clearance drive continues, the department faces an ongoing issue of limited space to store seized and accident-related vehicles. With plans to intensify towing operations, the question of vehicle storage remains unresolved.

The Vasai Regional Transport Office (RTO) has announced an online e-auction of 32 vehicles that were seized for non-payment of motor vehicle tax and violations of traffic rules. The auction is scheduled to take place on October 9, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The vehicles up for auction include buses, motor cabs, auto rickshaws, and goods vehicles. Interested bidders can apply for participation between September 30 and October 3.

Registration for the e-auction is available on eauction.gov.in. Additionally, inspection of the vehicles will be permitted at the Vasai RTO premises from September 25 to October 8, allowing prospective buyers to assess the vehicles before bidding.

Bidders are required to submit a demand draft of ₹50,000 per vehicle and complete document verification on October 7 and 8. All vehicles will be sold on an “as is” basis, and the RTO reserves the right to cancel the auction at its discretion.

This e-auction provides an opportunity for interested buyers to acquire various types of vehicles, from commercial transport to goods carriers, directly from the RTO.
