NMC to Auction Properties of 73 Major Property Tax Defaulters Starting July 2

Jun 21 2025

In a major move to recover long-pending property tax dues, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced the auction of 73 properties owned by top defaulters starting July 2, 2025. The civic body is acting against property owners who have failed to clear their dues despite multiple notices and final warnings over the past few years.

This auction marks the first phase in a broader recovery drive, with more defaulters expected to face similar action in the coming weeks.

What Triggered the Auction?

  • In March 2025, NMC issued 425 confiscation warrants to major defaulters (those owing over ₹1 lakh).

  • Only 10 defaulters made full or partial payments after the warrant stage.

  • Remaining high-value defaulters are now facing property seizure and auction.

Property Tax Collection Snapshot

  • Total Property Tax Dues in Nashik: ₹250+ crore

  • Total Defaulters Across City: Over 1.5 lakh

  • Notices Sent: 5,000+ in past 3 months

  • Warrants Issued: 425 major defaulters

Amnesty Scheme: A Missed Opportunity for Many

Between October 2024 and January 2025, NMC had introduced a generous amnesty scheme that offered:

  • Up to 90% rebate on penalties

  • Waiver of ₹30 crore in penalties

  • Collection of over ₹60 crore from 60,000 defaulters

Unfortunately, several major defaulters ignored the scheme, choosing not to clear their dues, which has now resulted in auction proceedings.

NMC’s Next Steps

  • This auction is only the first phase. More lists may be published in future if defaulters continue to ignore recovery notices.

  • The corporation is committed to enforcing property tax laws and will continue to issue warrants, penalties, and property seizure orders for chronic non-payers.

  • NMC has warned that interest at 2% per month and notice charges will continue to accumulate on unpaid amounts.

Civic Officials Say

“We’ve given several chances through notices and even an amnesty window. Those who failed to pay will now face legal and auction proceedings. We aim to reduce the ₹250 crore tax gap and ensure accountability.”

What Should Property Owners Do?

  • Check if your name is on the defaulter list at your local ward office or on the official NMC website.

  • If a warrant has been served, clear dues immediately to avoid property seizure.

  • Keep your property tax receipts and notice acknowledgments handy.

  • Avoid auctions and penalties by paying dues in advance or during future rebate windows.
