Mumbai: The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has set an ambitious target of developing more than 7.5 lakh homes in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as Maharashtra steps up efforts to expand affordable housing supply across the region.
The housing authority's large housing pipeline comes as Mumbai faces sustained demand for reasonably priced homes from first-time buyers, low-income groups and entry-level homebuyers .
MHADA Vice-President and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal said the authority has taken responsibility for developing around 7.5 lakh homes as part of the larger housing expansion planned for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The MHADA 7.5 lakh homes target forms a major part of Maharashtra's broader housing strategy for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
According to Jaiswal, around 30 lakh new homes will be required in the MMR under the Growth Hub initiative. The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) is expected to contribute around 22 lakh homes , while MHADA and other agencies are expected to develop around 8 lakh homes .
Within this broader target, MHADA alone has undertaken a pipeline of more than 7.5 lakh homes .

Mumbai's high property prices and limited availability of affordable housing have kept demand for MHADA flats strong.
The response to recent MHADA housing lotteries underlines this demand. The Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board recently conducted a computerised lottery for 2,640 homes , attracting 75,127 applications .
