The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is set to distribute 484 rehabilitation flats to eligible residents under the BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project in Naygaon, Mumbai, marking a significant milestone in one of the largest urban redevelopment initiatives in the country.
The distribution ceremony is scheduled to be held on March 16, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre in Nariman Point, Mumbai.
The BDD Chawl redevelopment project aims to replace decades-old chawl structures with modern high-rise residential buildings equipped with improved infrastructure and amenities. As part of the first phase, 484 families are set to receive newly constructed rehabilitation flats.
Residents who currently live in 160 sq. ft. chawl units will be provided with modern 500 sq. ft. residential apartments, offering significantly better living conditions.
Rehabilitation flats are residential apartments provided to existing residents whose homes are demolished during redevelopment projects. These flats ensure that original occupants are relocated into improved housing within the newly developed residential complexes.
Under this redevelopment project, eligible chawl residents will receive modern flats designed for permanent residential use, along with better infrastructure and urban facilities.
The new residential towers being developed under the BDD Chawl project include several modern amenities aimed at improving residents’ quality of life. These features include:
500 sq. ft. residential rehabilitation flats
Multi-storey residential towers
Parking facilities
Solar power systems
CCTV surveillance
Modern elevators
Improved sanitation and water supply
The redevelopment project spans around 66 acres, making it one of the largest urban housing redevelopment initiatives in Mumbai.
The ceremony is expected to be attended by key political leaders, including:
Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra
Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra
The project also reflects the broader housing development vision promoted by Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, focusing on improving urban housing infrastructure across the country.
The BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project is expected to transform old chawl settlements into well-planned residential communities. The project aims to provide safer, larger, and more comfortable homes to thousands of families who have lived in aging chawl structures for decades.
Officials have stated that the redevelopment will continue in phases, and more rehabilitation flats are expected to be distributed to residents in the coming stages of the project.
