The Maharashtra Transport Department is considering a one-time amnesty scheme to provide relief to vehicle owners struggling with long-pending traffic challans. The move is aimed at recovering a portion of the crores locked in unpaid fines while offering citizens a chance to clear their dues at a discounted rate.
75% Waiver for Two-Wheelers and Auto-Rickshaws
Owners of bikes and auto-rickshaws may be required to pay only 25% of the pending challan amount, with the remaining 75% being written off.
Additional Relief for Quick Payments
Citizens who clear their dues within 15 days may get an extra 50% relaxation, making it even more affordable.
Coverage Across Vehicle Categories
The scheme is expected to cover two-wheelers, cars, and heavy vehicles, though smaller vehicles may receive greater concessions than high-end and luxury cars.
Revenue Recovery Drive
In Mumbai alone, pending traffic fines have reportedly crossed ₹1,000 crore. The government hopes this scheme will ensure a substantial one-time recovery instead of leaving fines uncollected indefinitely.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has expressed positive intent towards the proposal, while Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar has already forwarded the plan to the Transport Secretary for approval.
If implemented, this scheme will not only provide citizens with a rare opportunity to settle long-standing dues but also help the government boost its revenues.
