Punjab Police Launches Statewide Drive to Clear 75,000 Abandoned Vehicles from Police Stations

Chandigarh, October 2025:

In a landmark initiative to declutter police stations and streamline traffic enforcement logistics, the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Traffic, A.S. Rai, has announced a comprehensive program to dispose of more than 75,000 abandoned vehicles lying in police station premises across the state.

The initiative, technically supervised by DSP Gurdev Singh, aims to address the long-standing issue of impounded vehicles - many of which have been accumulating for years due to traffic violations, theft cases, accidents, and other legal proceedings.

According to data compiled by the DGP Traffic Office, 424 police stations across Punjab currently hold over 75,000 two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Most of these vehicles are in deteriorated condition due to lack of space, prolonged storage, and poor maintenance - with several missing essential parts.

In the first phase, the Punjab Police plans to dispose of 35,323 vehicles, either through public auction or by allowing owners to reclaim their vehicles after fulfilling legal formalities.

The district-wise data reveals that Ludhiana City leads with 7,039 abandoned vehicles, followed by SAS Nagar (3,841), Ludhiana Rural (3,388), Fazilka (2,352), Mansa (1,679), Bathinda (1,656), Khanna (1,558), Tarn Taran (1,510), and Fatehgarh Sahib (985).

Speaking on the initiative, DGP A.S. Rai emphasized that the move is part of a broader strategy to ensure better space utilization, promote transparency through auction processes, and bring abandoned vehicles back into circulation.

"This step not only resolves the long-pending issue of vehicle congestion in police stations but also supports environmental and administrative efficiency," DGP Rai said.

The first-phase disposal process will commence soon, marking a significant step toward modernizing Punjab's traffic management and enforcement infrastructure

Ludhiana: Police Lines Begins Clearing 350 Abandoned Vehicles After Six Years

After lying untouched for more than six years, the Ludhiana Police Lines on Tuesday began auctioning impounded vehicles, finally kick-starting a long-pending clean-up drive. Nearly 350 vehicles - ranging from battered trucks and dented cars to scooters and autorickshaws reduced to scrap - were auctioned off to scrap dealers, who have now started towing them away.

For years, the premises had resembled a dumping ground, with rusted frames and abandoned vehicles piling up as silent reminders of traffic violations and criminal cases. Police commissioner Swapan Sharma admitted the move was "long overdue," adding, "These vehicles were occupying valuable space and had turned into waste. Their removal has freed up significant space, and we've already initiated the process of clearing vehicles dumped outside police stations and posts as well." ALSO CHECK - Punjab Cars eAuctions

Officials revealed that over 4,500 impounded vehicles still lie abandoned outside police stations and police posts across Ludhiana, creating congestion and inconveniencing commuters. Many of these remain unclaimed as owners either lack proper documents, find them too old or damaged to retrieve, or have already claimed insurance.

With the first phase of auctions now underway, the commissionerate plans to systematically dispose of the remaining vehicles to restore order and free up public spaces.
