Centre Approves 18,213 Houses for Telangana Under PMAY-Urban 2.0
Hyderabad: In a major boost to affordable housing in urban areas, the Centre has approved the construction of 18,213 houses across 118 towns and cities in Telangana under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0.
The decision was cleared during a meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee in New Delhi, following proposals submitted by the state government. According to officials, the Centre has also approved the release of ₹273 crore as the central share for the housing projects.
Officials from the Telangana State Housing Corporation said the houses will be built at an estimated cost of ₹910.65 crore, with the remaining funds to be arranged by the state government and beneficiaries.
The new houses will complement the state government’s flagship Indiramma Housing Scheme, which aims to provide financial assistance to economically weaker families to build homes.
Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive financial assistance of up to ₹5 lakh in phases to construct houses. Officials said the additional funding approved by the Centre will help speed up housing construction in urban areas and benefit thousands of low-income families.
State Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy recently announced that the second phase of the Indiramma housing programme will begin from April 1. The government plans to review pending cases and ensure that houses are allotted to beneficiaries by March 31.
The minister also directed officials to ensure that free sand supply reaches beneficiaries on time and suggested setting up brick manufacturing units through women’s self-help groups in each mandal to reduce construction costs.
Authorities have also been instructed to clear any pending payments to beneficiaries immediately and ensure that financial assistance is released without delays.
Officials say the combined push under PMAY-Urban 2.0 and the Indiramma Housing Scheme will significantly accelerate housing construction in Telangana’s urban areas, helping thousands of families realize their dream of owning a home.
Telangana Govt to Distribute Indiramma Houses to Eligible Poor by March 15
Hyderabad: In a major relief for thousands of poor families, the Telangana government has decided to begin distribution of houses under the Indiramma Houses Scheme by March 15, officials said. The move is expected to benefit people who have been struggling without permanent housing, including families displaced from Bhoodan lands in Khammam district.
State Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said the government is working to implement the scheme transparently and ensure that only eligible beneficiaries receive houses.
Officials said the government has already started a social and economic survey to identify eligible families. Priority will be given to those who have not previously benefited from government housing schemes and those holding white ration cards.
For families without land, the government has prepared plots in designated locations. In Khammam, plots have been identified in Velugumatla and surrounding areas.
Once beneficiaries are finalized, the government will provide financial assistance in phases, which will be deposited directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts to help them construct houses.
Officials said the government will also develop basic infrastructure in the newly created Indiramma housing colonies. This includes roads, electricity supply, drinking water facilities and drainage systems.
Apart from housing, the colonies are expected to include Anganwadi centres, schools and other basic amenities to support residents.
The government plans to distribute houses to eligible beneficiaries in Hyderabad around the time of Ugadi, the Telugu New Year festival.
The scheme is aimed at helping economically weaker families, particularly those who lost homes due to removal of illegal structures on Bhoodan lands.
According to officials, applicants must meet the following conditions:
Must be a permanent resident of Telangana
Should possess a valid white ration card
Preference will be given to those who applied under the Praja Palana programme
Aadhaar card and income certificate are mandatory
Applicants must not have previously benefited from housing schemes, including the double bedroom housing programme
Officials said the Indiramma housing initiative is expected to provide a long-term solution for poor families currently living in rented houses or temporary shelters. The government aims to ensure that the scheme provides not only housing but also social security and legal ownership rights for beneficiaries.
The Telangana government is preparing to construct 5 to 10-storey Indiramma housing complexes within Greater Hyderabad limits as part of its flagship housing programme for economically weaker sections.
State Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said the government plans to identify 28,000 eligible beneficiaries by the end of March 2026 in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Sangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts.
The decision was taken during a review meeting attended by ministers including Sridhar Babu, Ponnam Prabhakar and Azharuddin.
Authorities plan to build multi-storey housing units close to the beneficiaries’ existing localities to avoid disruption to livelihoods.

Officials informed the government that many beneficiaries were reluctant to move to houses constructed on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
Out of 42,000 houses built earlier in distant locations, only about half are currently occupied.
To improve occupancy, the government plans to construct high-rise housing complexes within city limits, allowing beneficiaries to remain close to workplaces, schools and essential services.
Officials were also asked to identify and remove bogus beneficiaries from previous allocations.
The housing department has been directed to issue sanction letters to 28,000 eligible beneficiaries who own residential plots within the limits of three Greater Municipal Corporations.
Authorities will also identify land parcels between the Regional Ring Road (RRR) and Outer Ring Road (ORR) for additional housing projects.
A detailed report on available land and potential beneficiary numbers has been requested within 10 days.
The Telangana Housing Corporation will release funds for unfinished houses once beneficiaries complete pending construction work.
The government is also examining the possibility of replacing dilapidated houses constructed earlier under the JNNURM scheme with new Indiramma houses.
A final decision on this proposal is expected after discussion in the state cabinet meeting.
District collectors have been instructed to verify the occupancy of houses already allotted under previous housing programmes.
Beneficiaries who are not residing in the allotted houses may receive official notices, ensuring that only eligible poor families receive housing benefits.
The government also directed officials to ensure that all housing colonies have basic infrastructure, including:
Drinking water supply
Electricity connections
Drainage systems
Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs)
Electricity meters must be transferred to beneficiaries’ names without delay.
Apart from housing for the poor, the government is considering affordable housing projects for middle-income families.
These projects may be developed between the RRR and ORR corridors, similar to the KPHM housing model.
Officials have been asked to identify four suitable locations for these housing projects.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced that the second phase of the Indiramma Housing Scheme will begin after April 2026.
The next phase aims to provide houses to remaining eligible beneficiaries across the state who could not be covered in the first phase.
The government said the scheme will be implemented with complete transparency and merit-based beneficiary selection, without political interference.
Under the urban housing initiative, the government is also constructing 3,500 flats in multi-storey Indiramma Towers across Hyderabad.
Key features of the project include:
12-floor towers
Two flats per floor
Construction underway in 19 towers
Authorities expect to complete and hand over 3 to 5 towers in the first phase of the current financial year.
Each flat is estimated to cost around ₹8 lakh and will include several essential facilities such as:
Drinking water supply
Electricity connection
Drainage systems
Internal roads
Parking facilities
Elevators
Community halls
Small parks and open spaces
The government may also provide subsidy-linked EMI options to make the homes affordable for economically weaker sections.
Eligible beneficiaries can receive financial assistance of up to ₹5 lakh for house construction.
The assistance is released in four instalments based on construction progress:
₹1,00,000 after foundation completion
₹1,25,000 after wall construction
₹1,75,000 after roof slab completion
₹1,00,000 after final completion
SC and ST beneficiaries may receive up to ₹6 lakh under the scheme.
The government has identified several priority groups for early housing allocation:
Widows
Divorced women
Persons with disabilities
Tribal communities
Sanitation workers
Agricultural labourers
Eligible beneficiaries will be selected through Gram Sabha verification and district-level screening.
Beneficiaries are classified into multiple lists based on eligibility and land ownership status.
L1 List: Applicants who already own land and whose houses are under construction or completed.
L2 List: Eligible applicants without land who are awaiting housing allocation.
L3 List: Additional eligible beneficiaries under verification.
The government is also preparing L4 and L5 lists to include applicants whose names were not present in earlier lists.
These lists will ensure that all eligible families eventually receive houses in a phased manner.
