In a move aimed at upgrading passenger amenities and boosting non-fare revenue, Indian Railways has approved the opening of premium single-brand outlets at selected stations, following an e-auction process.
The decision comes after the South Central Railway (SCR) proposed guidelines to introduce high-end brand outlets at railway stations, similar to those found at airports.
E-auction-based Allotment:
All stalls will be allotted strictly through the existing e-auction policy, ensuring transparency. No nominations will be allowed.
Premium Store Segment:
A dedicated “Premium Stores” category will be created within the e-auction system for such contracts. Successful bidders will have the freedom to choose the brand(s) they wish to operate.
Location & Category Selection:
Zonal and divisional railway authorities will identify prime station locations and suitable product/service categories based on:
Passenger footfall
Space availability
Passenger demographics
Station-specific characteristics
Focus on Passenger Experience:
Outlets must enhance the ambience and overall brand image of Indian Railways, creating a premium feel for travellers.
According to SCR’s proposal, premium outlets may include non-catering categories such as:
Travel Accessories: Samsonite, American Tourister, VIP, etc.
Apparel: Arrow, Van Heusen, Peter England, Biba, etc.
Footwear & Sports Gear: Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Puma, etc.
Other Premium Retail Categories catering to lifestyle and travel needs.
SCR has linked the proposal to the ongoing station redevelopment works under:
Major Upgradation projects
Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS)
Many of these upgraded stations are scheduled for completion in FY 2025–26, creating an opportunity to utilise newly developed commercial spaces for premium retail.
This initiative mirrors the airport retail model, where travellers often spend on branded products due to the convenience and premium ambience. By replicating this at railway stations—especially major junctions—Indian Railways aims to:
Boost non-fare revenue
Provide enhanced passenger convenience
Improve the visual and commercial appeal of stations
It also reflects a broader strategy to turn stations into commercial hubs, not just transit points, aligning with Smart Station Development goals.
Brands eyeing high-footfall retail spaces will have a new opportunity to reach millions of railway passengers daily. The e-auction model ensures fair competition and potentially lucrative long-term contracts for prime locations.
Bottom line:
With the introduction of premium single-brand outlets via e-auctions, Indian Railways is setting the stage for world-class station experiences and a modern retail environment — benefitting both passengers and the railway’s revenue stream.
